Maryborough is one of Queensland's oldest cities, set on the Mary River a short drive inland from Hervey Bay. Its streets are full of heritage buildings and old Queenslanders, it has a long engineering and rail-building tradition, and the country around it is cane, cattle, timber and small farms. Container jobs here lean towards restorations, trades and rural storage.

Restoring old Queenslanders

Maryborough's housing stock includes a large number of timber homes on stumps, many of them a century old or more. Restoring them often means restumping, re-levelling, replacing verandahs, or lifting the house to build underneath. Every one of those jobs involves moving the contents out of the way, and a container on the block keeps furniture, antiques and fittings secure and dry while the builders work.

Heritage restorations also generate salvaged materials worth keeping: old VJ boards, doors, fretwork and windows. A container is a good place to store them until they go back in. Older streets in Maryborough are often narrower and lined with established trees, so photos of the street and the block help us choose the right truck.

Rural blocks and farms

Out from town, around Tinana, Tiaro, Aldershot, Oakhurst, Bauple and Howard, blocks get bigger and the uses change. Cane growers, cattle farmers and small-acreage owners use containers for machinery parts, tools, feed, fencing gear and chemicals. A container is quicker to set up than a shed and can be moved when needs change.

Farm chemicals and fuel should go in a dangerous goods container, which has ventilation and a bunded floor to contain spills. It keeps flammable stock separate from everything else on the property.

Trades and industry

Maryborough has a long manufacturing history, with rail and heavy engineering, timber processing and a range of fabrication and maintenance businesses. Those firms, and the trades that support them, use containers for tool stores, parts and consumables. Industrial yards generally have good access for 40ft containers and sidelifters.

Builders working across the Fraser Coast also use containers as lockups on new home sites around Granville, Tinana and the growing edges of town.

The river, the rain and placement

The Mary River is a big part of Maryborough's identity, and like any river town, low-lying areas can take water after heavy rain in the catchment. Place a container on the highest firm ground on your property, raised on sleepers or blocks, and away from drainage lines. Cargo-worthy and new containers keep rain out from above, but they are not sealed against water rising around them.

Summer humidity also means condensation inside a closed container. Store things dry, keep them off the floor on pallets, and use moisture absorbers if you are storing for months. Our maintenance guide covers looking after the steel.

What size for which job

  • 20ft — restoration storage, household moves and trade lockups
  • 40ft — farm machinery and larger rural storage
  • 10ft — small inner-town blocks with limited room
  • Dangerous goods — fuel and farm chemicals
  • High cube — workshops for restorers and hobbyists who need headroom

Getting the block ready

Before a Maryborough delivery, measure the space and check what the truck will pass under. A 20ft container needs about 6.1 metres of length plus room to swing the doors, and the truck needs extra length again to tilt it off. Old streets often have low power lines, verandah roofs and big trees near the kerb, and older blocks can have narrow side access between the house and the fence.

Choose the set-down spot with the future in mind. If the house is being lifted or restumped, the builder will need room to work around it, so talk to them about where the container should go before we deliver. Have sleepers or concrete blocks ready for the corners so the container sits level and off the ground.

If you are storing antiques or heritage fittings, wrap them well, keep them off the floor and leave space for air to move. Timber and fabric suffer most from humidity.

Asked about Maryborough

Can I store furniture in a container while my Queenslander is restumped?

Yes, that is one of the most common jobs in Maryborough. Your furniture stays on site, secure and dry, and hire suits the length of most restorations.

What size container do I need for a heritage restoration?

A 20ft suits most homes' contents. If you are also storing salvaged timber, doors and windows to go back in, a 40ft or a second 20ft may be worth it.

Where should a container go on a riverside property?

On the highest firm ground available, raised on blocks or sleepers, away from low spots. Cargo-worthy and new containers keep rain out from above but are not sealed against rising water.

Do you deliver to Tiaro and Howard?

Yes, the rural district around Maryborough is part of our Fraser Coast area. Freight is quoted with the container.

Can I keep salvaged timber and fittings in a container during a restoration?

Yes. VJ boards, doors, windows and fretwork store well in a container if they go in dry and sit off the floor on bearers, with a gap to the walls for air to move.
