Sunstate CONTAINERS

Container sales and hire, run by people who pick up.

Cairns · Far North Queensland

In Cairns the calendar matters as much as the truck

Far North deliveries are planned around wet-season windows. We work around the rain rather than pretending a January booking is the same as a July one. Cairns can dump a month of water in a week, the tablelands roads cut, and a container that looked easy on a dry Thursday becomes a recovery job if someone insisted on the low side of the yard. The steel box is the simple part. The timing is the part we will argue with you about.

Grey container suited to covered storage through a Cairns wet season

Wet-season windows, and stock that is already up here

Cairns orders are filled from stock held for the Far North. We are not pointing you at a street. It is checked before it is loaded, and the freight is inside the quote. What is different up here is that we will sometimes tell you the sensible week is not the week you first asked for.

Portsmith and the industrial streets around the port (4870) are used to trucks. Earlville workshops and the southern approach through Edmonton (4869) and White Rock (4868) are a mix of trade lockups and households. Smithfield (4878) and Trinity Beach (4879) are tighter, hillier, and full of holiday houses that only need the box between renovations. Gordonvale (4865) starts to feel like cane country. Redlynch (4870) sits in a valley that holds water. Say which of those you are, because the advice changes.

Marine gear, tourism stock, and a house that has to stay liveable

The marine trade wants somewhere dry for engines, sails, life jackets and the boxes of stainless that rust if they live in a shed with a dirt floor. Tourism operators — reef boats, tour companies, the businesses that pack up after the season — use a container as a lockable store when the premises are already full of next month's freight. Neither group is helped by an as-is box that lets the rain in through a tired roof.

Households use them through renovations and through the wet, when under-house storage on a highset stops being storage and starts being a pond. A 20ft on the highest firm pad on the block, up on bearers, beats a cheap shed in the lowest corner. Bayview Heights (4868) and the sloping blocks toward Redlynch make that choice obvious if you walk the yard in February rather than in a brochure photo taken in August.

If you are packing a house move into the unit before a transfer south, humidity is the enemy of mattresses and cardboard. Let things dry, pallet the load, and do not seal wet linen in plastic. The maintenance note linked further down is the longer version of living with a steel box in the tropics.

Tracks, cyclones, and what the box will not do

A cargo-worthy container keeps rain off the top. It does not stop water that rises around it, and it is not a cyclone shelter. Through the season, roughly November to April, we would rather move a delivery than send a truck onto a saturated track because a form said the date was fixed. If your place is on a cane headland or a dirt road past Gordonvale, tell us what that road did last time the Barron or the Mulgrave came up.

Inside town the limits are more ordinary: a carport, a low street tree, a body corporate at a unit block in the city that has never pictured a container on the visitor bays. Photos of the approach and the pad are how we choose between a tilt-tray and a crane. Container Maintenance: Make Yours Last 30 Years covers vents, roof litter and the rust line that salt and humidity draw along a bottom rail if the box sits in the grass.

Heat inside a closed unit on a Cairns afternoon is real. Do not store aerosols, candles or anything the label says to keep cool, and do not plan to work a full day inside one without shade and airflow. A container is a lockable room. It is not air-conditioning.

Tropics, after the truck has gone

Vents, the roof, and the bottom rail are the three things that decide whether the box is still honest in five wet seasons. That maintenance piece is specific about them.

Cairns questions that are really about rain

Can you deliver to Cairns in the middle of the wet?

Sometimes, on sealed roads and firm pads. Not onto a saturated track because the paperwork preferred a date. Far North work is planned around the weather. If the road has a history of closing, say so before we book the truck.

We are at Trinity Beach and the drive is steep. Is a 20ft still possible?

Often, if there is a level pad and the wires clear the tip of the tray. A crane is the alternative when the only flat ground is behind the house. Photos looking up the drive and across the pad are what we need, not a guess from the street view.

Is the container cyclone-rated if we tie it down?

Tie-downs and a sensible position help an empty box stay put in wind. They do not turn it into a rated shelter, and they do not stop floodwater. Put it on the highest firm ground you have, and talk to the council if a structure rule applies where you live.

Tell us the Cairns suburb and the month

January on a dirt road and July on a Portsmith apron are different jobs. Add a photo of the pad if you have one.
